Maricopa County Court Tower

The Maricopa County Downtown Court Tower, a 695,000 SF facility, boasts a variety of technologies designed to improve efficiency and meet the rapidly increasing backlog and growing needs of our justice system. The new facility will allow for speedier trials, thereby cutting down higher jail costs caused by inmates’ needs for housing, food and other care. The building is Maricopa County’s single largest project with a total cost of approximately $340 million. Green Ideas integrated several sustainable strategies into the design, development and construction of the project allowing the Tower to earn LEED Gold level certification. Some of these strategies include efficient lighting and daylighting to reduce energy consumption, use of high-recycled materials sourced from local vendors, and implementation of a construction waste management plan that diverted more than 29,000 tons of waste from the landfill.

Sustainable Strategies

  • High-performance, reflective roofing system reduces the Urban Heat Island Effect

  • Low VOC-emitting materials for the building’s interior creates enhanced Indoor Environmental Quality

  • Occupancy sensors and permanent monitoring systems were installed to minimize energy use

  • Low-flow fixtures reduce domestic water use

  • Zero CFC-based refrigerants in HVAC base building systems reduce degradation of the ozone layer

  • Comprehensive Transportation Management Program effectively reduces single occupancy commuting

  • Wood products used in the project were harvested from Forest Stewardship Council certified forests

Project Results

  • LEED for New Construction GOLD level achieved

  • 22% energy cost savings above ASHRAE 90.1-2007 energy standard

  • 61% reduction of potable water use for irrigation

  • 32% reduction of potable water for domestic use

  • 92% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill
