Intel Ocotillo Campus

Intel Corporation Ocotillo Semiconductor Manufacturing Campus in Chandler, AZ has set a milestone for international environmental stewardship. It is the first semiconductor manufacturing campus in the world to receive Certification under the LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Rating System. Intel’s Ocotillo Campus houses three wafer fabrication plants, two central utility plants, three office buildings with cafés, two process waste buildings, one sort-manufacturing building and one generator building. An on-site photovoltaic system was developed that produces more than 755,000 kWh of electricity each year. During the three-year LEED performance period, the project achieved $1.58 million in cost savings. Intel has a strong overall commitment to corporate responsibility and to driving improvements in environmental performance over time. Green Ideas integrated several sustainable strategies into the project focused on reductions in air and greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste generation.

Sustainable Strategies

  • Enhanced auditing and partnering efforts for soil/durable waste management

  • Operations benchmarking of energy use, water consumption and air emissions through Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) Environmental Metrics Program (EMP)

  • Improvement of corporate design, construction, and operations & maintenance strategies

  • Generation of on-site renewable energy with a 755,000 kWh/year photovoltaic (PV) system

  • Implemented xeriscape landscaping, featuring native and locally adapted plants to reduce potable water use for irrigation

  • High-performance green janitorial program benefits all building occupants by providing better indoor environmental quality

Project Results

  • LEED for Existing Buildings Silver level achieved

  • 26% energy cost savings when compared to the national average

  • 66% site-wide water conservation (5 million gallons per day)

  • 90% of durable waste is diverted from the landfill

  • 20% reduction of conventional commuting trips through Trip Reduction Program
