Glory Road Transit Terminal

Sun Metro implemented a transit terminal program to improve access to transit services throughout El Paso, reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. Each terminal is designed to meet local needs and increase ridership. The Glory Road facility is located in an existing entertainment and hospital zone that is adjacent to the City’s major university campus and basketball arena. This seven-story, 202,000 square foot building includes the City of El Paso bus terminal, park-and-ride facilities, ground-level retail space and six levels of parking. The facility connects area commuters to downtown, employment destinations, the hospital and university. This facility was developed as a result of collaboration between the City of El Paso and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Green Ideas implemented several sustainable strategies into the design, development and construction of the project allowing it to exceed the original Silver level goal, to achieve LEED Gold level certification.

Sustainable Strategies

  • High-performance, reflective roofing system reduces the Urban Heat Island Effect

  • Low-flow fixtures reduce domestic water use

  • Native plants and high-efficiency drip irrigation system reduces exterior potable water use

  • Low VOC-emitting materials for the building’s interior creates enhanced Indoor Environmental Quality

  • Wood products used in the project were harvested from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forests

  • Building materials with high-recycled content were sourced from local vendors

  • Zero CFC-based refrigerants in HVAC base building systems improve Indoor Environmental Quality

Project Results

  • LEED for New Construction GOLD level achieved

  • 35% of energy cost savings above ASHRAE 90.1-2004 energy standard

  • 51% reduction of potable water for domestic use

  • 73% savings of potable water use for irrigation

  • 95% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill
