PayPal Epsilon Data Center Expansion

The PayPal Epsilon addition is a 25,600 SF, two story mixed use building comprised of office and warehouse space. Located on an existing campus in the urban context of midtown Phoenix, employees have close access to bus lines and the light rail, as well as restaurants and services. To further encourage alternative transportation methods, bicycle racks have been installed, along with preferred carpool parking and electric vehicle charging stations for use by employees and visitors. LED lighting has been installed with dual sensor controls in order to save energy while providing occupant control. Individual thermostats in private office and work areas have also been provided to give employees control over their work environment. The project team engaged in responsible construction methods including recycling of construction wastes, use of materials with recycled content and giving preference to regionally sourced and manufactured materials.

Sustainable Strategies

  • Site located in a heavily utilized urban context with access to bus and light rail modes of transportation

  • Bicycle racks and showers encourage employees to ride to work and further reduce impacts of automobile use

  • Occupancy and dual sensor LED lighting controls reduce energy demand and associated cooling loads

  • High-performance, reflective roofing system reduces the Urban Heat Island Effect

  • CO2 monitoring systems were installed in densely occupied areas

  • No CFC based refrigerants were used in the new HVAC systems

Project Results

  • LEED for New Construction SILVER level achieved

  • 77% reduction of potable water for irrigation

  • 20% energy cost savings above ASHRAE 90.1-2007 standard

  • 39% reduction of potable water for domestic use

  • 80% of construction waste was diverted from landfills
